Both plasma displays and organic LED (OLED) displays use the principle of a “bulb” to generate light with a colored surface to affect that light, in order to produce one of the colors of the display’s subpixels. LCD displays use a backlight to produce the light, which then passes through a colored filter to achieve a similar result. LED displays are essentially LCDs with LED backlights instead of fluorescent bulbs.
