With all of the recent news about IT security breaches and data theft, you may question why anyone would put anything in the cloud. The impact of these of security breaches can be quite overwhelming: up to 80 million of Anthem’s customers had their personal information stolen; up to 60 million credit card numbers were stolen from Home Depot; 76 million households and 7 million small business customers of JP Morgan Chase had their contact information stolen; and Target estimates its data breach costs $162 million. All of these as a result of IT security breaches. So is it really safe to put your IT computing out in the cloud?

Cisco recently announced an important continuation of its cloud and data center joint partnership with Microsoft to make it easier for cloud providers to go to market. Last month I wrote about IBM’s latest big data solution, this month I want to talk about what’s new for IBM in the cloud. IBM has provided the SmartCloud product offering for some time now, but as the shape of the cloud has evolved, so the shape of that solution has changed too. Today cloud infrastructure architectures are stabilizing, and IBM recently announced a retooling of their cloud offering around OpenStack, the open source cloud computing platform currently emerging as a major player in this market. So, what used to be IBM SmartCloud is now IBM Cloud Manager with OpenStack.

What’s the Value of an AWS Certification?

It’s common knowledge that earning an AWS certification is a great way to qualify your experience in the eyes of your peers and employer and to increase your organization’s proficiency with AWS-based applications. However, there is another benefit that has not be quantified until now. Results from the 2014 IT Skills and Salary Survey conducted by Global Knowledge and Windows IT Pro revealed that the average pay of four AWS certifications exceeded $100,000. While there is no guarantee that a certification equals a six-figure salary, it certainly couldn’t hurt.
